The Lagos Renewed Hope City project is 85–90 percent complete. With many units already fitted. And in their final stages before being handed over to beneficiaries, Darma said.

During the inspection, the minister stated that he has seen over 80 percent completion. And can say that it is between 85 and 90 percent complete, as all of the houses have fittings.

The Lagos development is one of the biggest housing developments. Particularly within the Renewed Hope Housing Program. The project is situated in an area that is experiencing rapid growth. In terms of investment and infrastructure development along the Ibeju-Lekki corridor. Which is one of the fastest investment and infrastructure growth corridors in Nigeria.

The project represents ongoing government efforts to augment its affordable housing supply. And promote the economy through substantial residential development. Which is important to real estate investors, developers, and prospective home buyers.

The housing project will be handed over to 2,084 families. Which is under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) contract. The contract was signed with the federal government and private-sector providers. The model is said to be an effective way of speeding up the delivery of houses. And also harnessing the expertise and investment of the private sector.

The minister applauded the PPP model. He said that coordinated development methods are still very much needed to solve the huge housing deficit. And access to good homes across the country for various income groups.

The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) is contributing to the financing of the project. Having invested in 1,500 out of the 2,084 housing units that are currently in development.

Darma commended the bank’s role in delivering affordable housing. He’s calling to the fore an example of its commitment. I.e., to making homeownership opportunities available to Nigerians.

The minister said the units could be used to house thousands of people. And will complement other efforts to solve the housing shortage issue in Nigeria, which the FMBN is sponsoring.

“This is 1,500 units financed by FMBN, which has housed approximately 6,000 Nigerians. These have been doing their jobs well,” Darma replied, “so far as they are concerned.”

Shehu Usman Osidi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, also reiterated the FMBNH’s determination. Which is to disburse completed housing units to qualified beneficiaries.

Osidi stressed the need for quick delivery of the projects. He also recommended that developers implement a ‘phased delivery’ approach to the projects. A delivery whereby a unit would be available when completed. But work on other areas of the project is still ongoing.

Progressive handovers would allow beneficiaries to get completed homes sooner, he said. But at the same time, keep the overall project on track.

The FMBN chief also applauded the developers behind the project. He applauded them for upholding the standards of the construction works. And he also noted that affordability is one of the main tenets of the housing initiative.

The housing units are being provided using a cross-subsidy arrangement. This is to make it more accessible to lower- and middle-income residents. While at the same time maintaining a financially viable project, he said.
