The Federal Government has announced a nationwide review of all abandoned housing projects to determine their current status, completion levels, and the necessary interventions required to make them functional.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqa Darma, disclosed this during an inspection of an abandoned National Housing Programme (NHP) estate located in the Kubwa-Karsana District of Abuja.
Preserving Public Investments
Darma expressed deep concern over the continuous abandonment of government-funded housing initiatives, stating that the government will take decisive steps to upgrade and complete viable projects across the country.
“We cannot continue to allow housing projects that were started with public funds to remain abandoned,” Darma stated.
He emphasized that these abandoned sites represent significant public investments that must be preserved and utilized to deliver more affordable and decent homes to citizens.
“These are assets belonging to Nigerians, and our responsibility is to ensure that they are completed, functional, and occupied by the people who need them,” he added.
Boosting Housing Delivery Efficiency
The nationwide review aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Housing Agenda, which aims to improve access to affordable accommodation and reduce the national housing deficit.
The Minister explained that the government’s approach will prioritize the completion of viable projects while simultaneously upgrading existing housing infrastructure to ensure optimal utilization.
According to Darma, maximizing existing investments will allow the government to deliver housing more efficiently and prevent the waste of resources already committed to these abandoned sites. This recovery strategy will complement the ongoing construction of new housing developments under current federal programs.
The Minister assured that once completed and rehabilitated, the housing units will be allocated transparently to deserving Nigerians.
